Letter from the Children of Sakine Mohammadi: Protest Against our Mother’s Stoning [DE | EN | ES | FA | FR | HE | NED | NO | SV | TR]

Translations in this post: DE | EN | ES | FA | FR | HE | NED | NO | SV | TR

Do not allow our nightmare become a reality,
Protest against our mother’s stoning!

Today we stretch out our hands to the people of the whole world. It is now five years that we have lived in fear and in horror, deprived of motherly love. Is the world so cruel that it can watch this catastrophe and do nothing about it?

We are Sakine Mohammadi e Ashtiani’s children, Farideh and Sajjad Mohamamadi e Ashtiani. Since our childhood we have been acquainted with the pain of knowing that our mother is imprisoned and awaiting a catastrophe. To tell the truth, the term “stoning” is so horrific that we try never to use it. We instead say our mother is in danger, she might be killed, and she deserves everyone’s help.

Today, when nearly all options have reached dead-ends, and our mother’s lawyer says that she is in a dangerous situation, we resort to you. We resort to the people of the world, no matter who you are and where in the world you live. We resort to you, people of Iran, all of you who have experienced the pain and anguish of the horror of losing a loved one.

Please help our mother return home!

We especially stretch our hand out to the Iranians living abroad. Help to prevent this nightmare from becoming reality. Save our mother. We are unable to explain the anguish of every moment, every second of our lives. Words are unable to articulate our fear…

Help to save our mother. Write to and ask officials to free her. Tell them that she doesn’t have a civil complainant and has not done any wrong. Our mother should not be killed. Is there any one hearing this and rushing to our assistance?

FRANCAIS:

NEDERLAANDSE:

Yaşadığımız her anın, her saniyenin acısını anlatabilmemiz imkansız.

    • Dearest, thank you for asking. There are two things that you can do:

      1) Letter-writing campaign is here: make sure our voices are heard so Sakine’s voice is not ignored: https://missionfreeiran.wordpress.com/2010/06/26/sakine-children/

      2) The Campaign to Save Sakine Mohammadi is calling for Global Protest on June 2 (but June 3 is fine too). Concerned people can hold a protest in front of an appropriate location. If people protesting against Sakine’s stoning send us photos of their protests, we will post them here. We encourage people to combine demands for Sakine’s freedom with demands to remove the Islamic Republic from the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Again, many thanks for the care and concern that you, and all those who have left their sincere sentiments here, have expressed.

      Warmest regards,

      • hello, i am shocked to know about the stoning of woman in Iran. I will send the letters but i would like to know if there is anything else that i can do. for example if you could give me mail adresses of women organizations or human wrights organizations that can help, maybe if they are connected to the UN. after all Iran is a part of the UN and as i understood even a part of the womens wrights committe of the UN???? such an absurd…. i will write to any official that i can to try and help these poor children and their mother, and also any woman in Iran who might find herself one day in this situation. this cruel babarian ritual must be stopped by any person or country who sees itself as a human being. thank you for your help.

      • Dear Laura,

Thanks so much for your concern – it is greatly appreciated. I agree – it is agonizing to know that such cruel barbarity continues in our world.

As you suggest, our approach is to put pressure on our national governments and on the UN and other international organizations to push them to lean on the Islamic Republic for the atrocities they are committing.

We at Mission Free Iran undertake a lot of actions in support of women’s freedom and equality in Iran. You may be especially interested in our campaign to have the Islamic Republic removed from the UN Commission on the Status of Women. The main campaign page is here:
https://missionfreeiran.wordpress.com/take-action/solidarity-with-women/uncsw/ You can find more by going to the “Blog Post Categories” drop-down menu and clicking on UN Commission on the Status of Women. There are a lot of different actions you can take there including letter-writing to support HR1371, which has echoed our demands to remove the Islamic Republic from the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Finally, if you are in the DC area, we hold regular demonstrations against the regime, and this Friday at 6pm we will protest Sakine’s sentence at the Islamic Republic’s office, then walk to DuPont Circle to share information with the community.

Please feel free to visit us here or on Facebook and stay in touch!
There’s lots to do, and more helping hands are always welcome. <3

        Warmest regards,
        Maria

  10. Stoning is a form of penal judgment that belongs to the sixth century, not the 21th. Wanting to preserve a moral society is one thing, but forcing your own morals under the threat of a death sentence is far from being moral within itself.
To you, the children, I do feel for you but I am not optimistic for the future, you, just like so many in your country, will soon become a forgotten statistical figure in some government (not necessarily your own) report of civil unhappiness. Your only possible solution: Smuggle your dear mother out of prison and escape the country, to a place of actual freedom. I know I might sound harsh, but such is reality, I doubt that any letter showing international disapproval will so much as nudge the opinion of these so called “judges” in you country. I am sorry for your mother.

    • please do not insult Islam, you have to read about this wonderfull religion before judging it, and try to make a difference between Islam and some moslems, for sure you see what the israeli soldiers everyday do in Palastina? you see what the US armee did and still do in Irak… please read and try to understand what the real Islam is.
      Best regards.

      Posted by Freeman | July 5, 2010, 5:17 am
      • Freeman is right. It would be ridiculous to suggest Christians have never harmed anyone or done misdeeds, or any other religion. So why suggest Islam? The danger is not the faith of Islam but extremists who use their moral grounds and their faith to justify their violation of others’ rights.

My university just had Iraqi students come to visit us, to learn more. On the blog they share their thoughts on, one student notes that they realize that they don’t have a thorough understanding of American culture and ideals there, just as we don’t have that of their own culture and ideals.

Slinging metaphoric rocks at a large group of people (who clearly, by this letter, do NOT agree with the justification of human rights violations with interpretations of Qu’rani teachings) does absolutely nothing in the long run but dig a deeper trench. There are groups in every world faith that instill the same principles this regime does of harsh punishment for what is seen as moral straying. So blame the Islamist extremist, not the Muslim world. There is a difference.

      • Yes, we have already seen how islam responds and how islam is killing people. Islam is an aggression and deception. Only Jesus Christ gives freedom and love!

      • So much anger against Muslims. I look for indignation at stoning. Against violence against women. In Arabic. Stand up and say this simple statement, Justice, justice shall you love. Muslims speak up and change your worlds, begin with Iran. Stop outer violent jhad and commit to inner jhad. Begin now. Stoning is unacceptable anytime forever. God is now.

  23. To the Iranian Officials who can prevent the stoning to death of this mother Sakine Mohammadi,
We are parents and International educators, familiar with aspects of the Hebrew Bible, Christian Biblem the Quran & other holy texts. We call upon you to spare the life of Sakine Mohammadi and not execute her.
God teaches us to take care of each other with particular concerns for children and their mothers. God is the only power in our universe that can give and take life. You are not God & you do not have this power.
Your plan to stone to death this mother must be stopped, to allow her to live and for her children to have their mother back. Executing her will not bring back her husband whom she did not murder anyway. Keeping her alive however, will give her children their mother and will clear you from murdering her.
If you wish to be like God, then be meriful, compassionate, loving, caring & just. We beg you to spare this mother’s life. We have no doubt that this is what God would want you to do.
We call everyone, irrespective of his/her religion & faith, to pray, meditate & visualise Sakine Mohammadi being saved from this horrific execution and returned to her children. May God help them and bring a miracle to their lives.

I wonder why there aren’t any protests in Europe by the moslems immigrants and there fervent supporters in the extreme left against this hideous, barbaric, unhuman act. I guess they prefer to voice themselves only for “human” cases and organizations like the Hamas in the Gaza strip, the Hezbollah in Lebanon and the “Moslem Brothers” in Egypt. They dont have the time nor the enthusiasm for a Woman who face a death penalty by a Nazi regime like the Iranian regime.
    What an hypocrisy.

      1) Letter-writing campaign to international organizations: https://missionfreeiran.wordpress.com/2010/06/26/sakine-children/

      2) Global Protest on June 2 (but June 3 is fine too).

Thanks agains for calling for people protest. That is exactly what we need. <3

He singlehandedly cut off the heads of several hundred Jewish prisoners at Medina. For starters.

The epidemic of violence that is today’s Islam and permeates all the countries that are cursed with this plague goes straight back to the founder of this so-called religion.

Shari’a Law is not merciful – it’s bloody and unforgiving. Just like the ideology it stems from.

  74. Irrespective of this woman’s alleged crime, stoning is a barbaric punishment that has no place in the modern world. If you feel this is just reward, you cannot be human. Anyone carrying out this punishment is already dead to their humanity, they have become worse than animals because animals only kill to eat.

Do not do this Iran, Once a brilliant and sophisticated culture, are you really reduced to murdering defenceless women in the most barbaric way? Can you imagine the pain of such a killing and if you can, can you still call it just? No it is no just, but nasty and vindictive and god will hold you to account for it on the day of judgement.

Instead show mercy for the sake of a humanity that we are all apart of.

  83. How can you be sure she did sleep with the men? (Not that it is anyone’s business if she did!)
In most likelyhood, she was raped by them!

But then the merciful and just laws of the Muslim Sharee’a state that a woman complaining of rape, MUST bring forth 4 MALE witnesses to her rape. Otherwise she’ll be considered an adulterer and will face the just and merciful death by stoning!

You see how humane these laws are! They are so merciful to rapists and won’t condemn an innocent man of rape on behalf of the victim’s testemony alone (even if collaborated with forensic evidence!) Women these days are such liers and aim to destroy the reputation of good men and accuse them so lightly of such an unbelieveable crime, i.e. rape!

Thank you my God for not making me a Muslim!

  87. If begging and pleading will help this woman, then I beg and plead for her life. Jesus Christ said, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone” in His time on earth. Have you learned nothing from this? Jesus is Islam’s prophet also, is He not? “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” None of you are without sin. How can you condemn anyone to death unless he takes the life of another? For this sin of killing this woman, you will be guilty of a mortal sin and deserve death yourself. Can you not see the wisdom in this? Please spare this woman’s life for the sake of her innocent children.

  92. With all due respect, when people like Geert Wilders point at things like this, they’re called “racist” and “nazi” by our wannabe “elites.” The same elites, the same islam appeasers from the political left wing are SILENT on this issue.

This is sharia law. Sharia law is absolute. The prophet said that women, who commit adultry, must be stoned to death. And the prophet was a perfect being, so islamic mythology goes.

    There’s nothing you can do.

Well, you could invade Iran and throw out the fascist regime and reform islam like Christianity has been reformed… but that’s not going to happen. Not in a hundred years.

But this is it, the true face of islam. And people like Geert Wilders and myself are called “racist” for not wanting this on our doorstep. Yeah, right.

I’m sorry for what is about to happen to your mother, I don’t believe that she had consentual sex with these two men that killed her husband, I believe that she was forced into having sex, raped. I believe that instead of her being stoned, the two men should stand trial, first for the killing of your mother’s husband, your father and also for the raping of your mother. I’m sorry that your leaders choose to blame the woman for the sins of the men, they should be the ones to die for the evil they caused to your parents, I will pray for your mother and you, her children. we know that God is in Control, Pray to Him, for He is the only one that can Help your mother. and I will pray that God will allow those men to pay for the harm that they have caused your family and just know that God is Good and one day soon, when He comes again to take us all back home, you will see your mother and your father again and all will be much better in our new Heavenly Home. 116. Hi,

I am not sure if this letter is a hoax. What is she being charged for? Why are you in Turkey? I know some people (countries) that would think this is the perfect time to create fiction between Turkey and Iran, when they are friends to each other now.
Why don’t you give us more details like the emails of the officials we can contact in Iran? Where are the names of the officials in charge of this case? Which crime has she committed? Which jail is she in? What government department is looking into her case?

How long have you been apart? Why don’t you go to the mainstream media, like the BBC, CNN, MSNBC, the Euro News, Al-Jazeera, etc.. you do not mention anything about what you have tried to do already. Why don’t you try to get some lawyers to help you, some TV station, some politicians, some diplomats, some NGOs (like Amnesty International) or the Red Crescent to intervene on your behalf. Can’t you go to Iran yourself and ask for her back? Why was she in Iran anyway, if you are now in Turkey? Did you escape to Turkey? What were you escaping from?

Is she a political prisoner? Did she do nothing wrong? Is this a picture of her? If so, it looks like she is being buried under the ground ready for stoning… Is she already dead? Or is this a picture of someone else who was killed by stoning before? How can you have a picture of your mother’s stoning before it happens? …when you are in Turkey? Why is the picture an analog back and white picture? When everyone who is a political dissident is using their digital cameras in an age of digital cameras? This looks like a very old photograph!?

In truth.. isn’t this a piece of propaganda? Who do you work for? And why are you releasing this information now? Is it like the propaganda used against Iraq, slowly making the invasion seem natural? Like cooking a frog in hot water…the frog doesn’t realize its being cooked to death, until it is too late…

I hope you are not working for the American corporate media or the US Conservative underground known as the CIA.

There are actually a lot of people who are organizing their own protests against this atrocity in the coming days.

This coming Sunday July 11 is International Day Against Stoning, and there are MANY people organizing protests for this day. But if you can’t do it this weekend, then do it next weekend, no problem. If you need help/guidance in setting up your event, let us know. If you’ve never held your own protest before, a good way to learn how to put one together is to read our event report; it has a lot of details in there that can provide guidance, plus downloadable flyers, the resolutions for the protest that can be read at your event, etc. If you have any questions at all, you can ask us and we will help; we will also help to advertise your protest for you. If you hold a protest, send us the photos and an event report and we’ll post it. Our event report is here:

I don’t know what effect international condemnation can have when the regime in power so willfully ignored it when the elections last year were under contest. 140. I am appalled at this. It’s almost too much for someone raised in a Western society to wrap their heads around, how this could happen, how people could stand by and let this happen, let alone take part in it. I have signed the online petition, and forwarded it on to all of my contacts, begging them to do the same. I will be going to the letter writing campaign info page as soon as I leave my comment. My heart breaks for this woman and her children. Whether or not one believes adultery to be a crime, this woman has ALREADY BEEN PUNISHED. I am so sick with grief and worry; I will do every bit I can, and it pains me that it is so little.
I know that it’s a Christian idea, but let he who is without sin cast the first stone could not be more applicable. My prayers are with you, her children, and with her, that she might finally be reunited with her family and live the rest of her life in peace, unmolested by people who would distort religion to this shameful degree.

Who can speak for her, what are the crimes she is taken in prison for, how can this be investigated so she can return an be with her family and children.

Members, Countries, Presidents in this world and in UN, take part and find ways to solve situations like this.

What God wants to stone a woman, a mother. I believe that he or she who has no sin throws the first stone.
There is noone who can throw this stone.

And everone-if we look into our hearts, read our Holy books, Koranen, Bible, Torah and the words of holy men and women, perhaps we can find a way to be merciful and live together in peace in this world

Let her get back to her children and live her life. We all are created by god with the same material. She shouldn’t be tortured as an dirty animal. She is a human with a heart and for all those human who have a true heart please support her sons to imprison their mother. We all have or had mothers no one would want to see they’re mother stoned to death so why should ashantianis sons suffer without her. Help to set her free

    • The idea that the people chose the Islamic Republic is one of the biggest frauds and revisionist histories inflicted upon the modern world. It was a coalition of different political currents that overthrew the Shah, and the Islamists were not even the majority among this coalition. Once the ’79 revolution succeeded in overthrowing the Shah, there was an Islamist counterrevolution that took place, aided and abetted by the British govt and also the US govt, via the use of BBC and VOA to promote Khomeini as if he were a viable leader. The Islamists executed thousands upon thousands of people, and it took them years after they initiated the counterrevolution to finally take complete control over the country. That is why you hear stories about Khavaran, that is why the Islamic Republic has for 31 years engaged in bloody repression of Kurdistan, the last front against the Islamists to fall, and even then only under massive military attack. Do not think for one moment that this regime has ever been considered legitimate.

  164. Shame on the Iranian authorities to let a law like this live on…that is PATHETIC! A government that does such a thing or perpetuates such laws, is belittling and sinking itself to the lowest level possible.
To you Iranian authorities: “You are not God, to the civilized world you are abusers of powers when the world hears such monstrosities, do not commit such crimes any longer, as they will not remain unpunished. I trust God will take care of you. God will not let you have peace of mind until you abolish this law.”

To you, Sakine Mohammadi Ashtiani and your dearest children, to you I am sending my kindest and heartfelt thoughts. May all the good powers in this world come virtually together to stop this evil! May all the positive energy and positive powers of the Earth join to bless you with a peaceful life next to your children, and to keep you away from a death you don’t deserve.

If you have not yet written letters, check out this page, which has sample letters and addresses you can write to:
      https://missionfreeiran.wordpress.com/2010/06/26/sakine-children/

In addition, you can write letters to your government representatives and ask them to publicly condemn the execution of Sakineh Ashtiani. Hold a demo, even if it’s just you and a friend – instructions are here:
      https://missionfreeiran.wordpress.com/2010/07/07/stand-up/

If you just hold a sign saying NO! to Stoning and Execution in Iran and send a photo to us (maria.rohaly@gmail.com), we’ll post it, and it adds to the evidence showing that the WHOLE WORLD stands against the brutality of this regime that relies on execution to achieve its ends.

Thank you for your willingness to help her – anything we do for Sakineh’s case does help her, AND it helps many in her same situation, while at the same time supporting women’s rights throughout Iran. <3

      Best,
      Maria

  173. As a practising muslim brother staying in South Arfica, and as a learned scholar of islam, haveing completed 3yrs studying this religion of ours under the care of some of the highest and most respected teachers both localy and abraod, i would like to offer a public statement on my behalf of all the sunni muslims ie: the sane muslims

Firstly lets examine what our religion tells us about killing another intentionally

‘One of the gravest of major sins with which a person can meet his Lord is the sin of killing a soul whose killing Allaah has forbidden. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein; and the Wrath and the Curse of Allaah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him” [al-Nisa’ 4:93] It was narrated that Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was asked about major sins, and he said: “Associating others with Allaah, disobeying one’s parents, murder and bearing false witness.”

    Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2510; Muslim, 88.

No lets see what the quaran says about accusing someone of adultery and the conditions of handing down a sentence.

It is not permissible to accuse chaste women of zina (adultery). Zina can only be proven by the testimony of four men who see the act take place with their own eyes, and see the penis enter the vagina, or by the unforced confession of the man or woman who committed zina. Anything other than that is accusing a Muslim woman of zina, for which the person should be given eighty lashes.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And those who accuse chaste women, and produce not four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes, and reject their testimony forever. They indeed are the Faasiqoon (liars, rebellious, disobedient to Allaah)”

    [al-Noor 24:4]

As you can see with the proof i have provided above that this is not an act followed in accordance withour islamics teachings, but it is carried out by the corrupt and down right unislamic monstersm who think they are muslims but really they are a bunch of asshole’s…

Shia muslims are not muslims according to the sunni muslims, they are a deviant sect who teach a wrong islam, and it is because of them that us sunni muslims are being stroked with the same brush as them. If this was a sunni ruled country this and almost 99% of these stonings would never have happend.

May the all mighty grant us all a greater understanding and may he have mercy on Sakineh and her family.

    Allah knows best.

  177. When I read this same news, I feel ashamed to be called ‘Human’. While animals only kill to eat, false leaders use the power gained by lying and cheating, to commit horrible crimes, supported by his nation ignorant, deprived of information and without the knowledge needed to interpret their religion. Any religion or creed that encourages death should not be worthy of being taken seriously.

Serious as this, is we allow world leaders has commercial relations with Iran, a nation that violates human rights.

This capitalist world we live in, close your eyes to human suffering. While we, people who still feel outraged by barbaric acts, we try to use diplomacy and the words to ‘soften’ the heart of brutes, who can not see the value that life has.
If someone committed a sin, certainly not this woman, but this nation, who lives at the age of the caves and its president insane!

We also commit sins, when we let our leaders to engage with the barbarian IRAN.
We commit sins when we become silent with these injustices!

    Long live the Sakine Mohammadi!

That despite their suffering on the shoulders of all who support and cross your arms against your death. May God, Allah, whatever their creed, turn your face as these brutes crawl for forgiveness.

Posted by Albert Perkins | September 1, 2010, 12:24 am
    • Hi, Albert,
I have not heard that anyone has actually done this, though I have heard it suggested.
While throwing stones at an Embassy has the potential to hurt someone and therefore shouldn’t be done, if it becomes necessary (e.g., they carry out a stoning or they execute Sakineh, Maryam, Azar, or anyone else sentenced to be stoned to death, regardless of whether they stone or hang them), we advocate that people living within range of a Islamic Republic embassy or office should take stones to that office and place them in front of the door or gate to block the entrance the following morning. If you can, go ahead and drip some red paint on the rocks to make sure that the regime does not miss your meaning.

    • Dear Stilina,
Unfortunately, Sakineh is still imprisoned. However, the campaign to save her life has resulted in stopping her stoning execution. This is good, but not good enough. The Islamic Republic continues with mass executions of others on a near daily basis. Sakineh brought the crimes of this regime to worldwide attention. Now the humane element within the society needs to take the next step and generate more pressure against engaging with the Islamic Republic as if it were a legitimate government. It is not and never has been. All embassies should be closed and diplomats be sent home; travel should be banned for regime representatives.
Thank you for your concern for our precious Sakineh, and by extension your concern for allof those suffering under this regime in a similar fashion.
      Best regards,
