Stockholm Pride 2012: Länge leve mänskligheten!

(English translation below Swedish; statement prepared by Mission Free Iran to be delivered at the Stockholm Pride 2012 Asylum Forum)

Det är en ära för oss på Mission Free Iran att delta i Stockholm Pride och i asyl forumet som hålls i samband med denna fantastiska festival för mänskligheten.

Detta är en ära för oss, eftersom vi också kämpar för de grundläggande rättigheterna för individen: rätten att älska vem du vill älska, rätten att tänka och uttrycka dina tankar offentligt, rätten till social jämlikhet, till att finnas och leva i ovillkorliga rättigheter. Vi delar era humana värderingar och ser oss själva som deltagare i er kamp.

Det är sant att Sverige, när det gäller “tolerans” av sexuell läggning och ras, har distanserat sig från många andra länder och särskild från vårt hemland, Iran, där heterosexuella älskare stenas till döds och homosexuella hängs och kastas från höjder eller bränns till döds om de befinns “skyldiga” till samlag. Avståndet är stort och svenska samhällets framsteg hittills uppmuntrar oss, men vi tror att det fortfarande finns mycket att göra även i Sverige.

Varje framsteg som görs i Sverige påverkar övriga världen i positiv riktning. Idag en bra bit in på 20 hundratalet, är det fel att inte inse det globala samspelet och influenser. Minns exemplet med Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.

Således står vi tillsammans över hela världen mot bakåtsträvandet och för alla människors lika värde:

Vi står här i dag att fira Pride och vi ser fram emot att fira denna dag tillsammans i Teheran … snarast.

Stockholm Pride 2012: Long live humanity!

It is an honour for us at Mission Free Iran to participate in Stockholm Pride, and in the Asylum Forum related to this fantastic festival of humanity.

This is an honour for us especially because we too are struggling for the basic rights of the individual: the right to love who you want to love, the right to think and express your thoughts publicly, the right to social equality, the right to exist and live in unconditional freedom. We share your humane values and consider ourselves participants in your struggle.

It is true that Sweden, with regard to “tolerance,” with regard to sexual orientation and race, has distanced itself from our country of origin, Iran, where heterosexual lovers are stoned to death, and homosexuals are hanged, thrown from heights to their death on the ground below, or set on fire if found “guilty” of making love. The distance is great, and Swedish society’s advances so far encourage us, but we strongly believe that there is still a lot to be done even in Sweden, especially in the areas of institutions and culture and even the constitution.

Every inch of progress here in the area of individuals’ rights in society, and society’s collective responsibility towards the individual, and towards protection of individuals’ rights, directly affect the “outside” world. Today, well into the 21st century, it is wrong not to realize the global interactions and influences. We have only to remember the effects of Western governments, which enraged citizens forced to react to the threats of stoning to death of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.

Thus, the humane front stands together across the world hand-in-hand against reaction and for human equality:

We stand here with you today to celebrate Pride, this festival of humanity, and we look forward to celebrating this day together in Tehran… sooner rather than later.
