TAKE ACTION: Stoning, Killing and Persecution of “Emo” Teens in Iraq Must Stop!

In February of 2012, Iraq’s interior ministry drew attention to the “emo” subculture, labeling it “Satanism” and ordering a community police force to stamp it out. “Emo” is a form of punk music developed in the United States. Fans are known for their distinctive dress, often including tight jeans, T-shirts with logos and distinctive long or spiky haircuts.

As a result, a number of teen-agers, mostly males, have been targeted, attacked, and killed by the vicious act of stoning to death using cinderblocks, bricks, and stones: ‘First they throw concrete blocks at the boy’s arms, then at his legs, then the final blow is to his head, and if he is not dead then, they start all over again,’ one person who managed to escape told Al-Akhbar. The number of teens killed due to the order to “stamp out” the emo sub-culture ranges from 14 to over 90 as of early March 2012.

We must not remain silent while our young brothers and sisters in Iraq are murdered in the most brutal way, simply for wanting to be free to express themselves through their dress, music, thought or speech. There is an implication by the Iraqi regime that “emo” culture is a marker for homosexuality and this is particularly reprehensible; homosexuality is not a crime, and people should be free to love whomever they choose.

HOW TO HELP:
We ask everyone to urgently send emails to the government of Iraq, with copies to the UN and to international Foreign Ministries, demanding the resignation and prosecution of the Interior Minister for calling for these killings; a timeframe for implementing the prosecution of all involved in these killings from the Interior Minister down to the community police; and a formal statement from the Iraqi government acknowledging the universal human rights of Iraqi people.

To the Iraqi Government Cabinet:

I am outraged and appalled by the barbaric killings and stoning to death of teen-agers who are categorized as being part of the “emo” subculture, or who simply “look different” from other young people. This is a heinous, systematically implemented crime and I condemn it in the strongest terms.

I make the following demands in order to bring an end to these barbarities, which are an attack on all humanity, and bring the perpetrators to justice.

1- The Interior Minister must resign and face prosecution for directly provoking the militias to attack and kill (by stoning to death) teen-agers dressed in “emo”- or “western”-style clothing.

2- The Iraqi Government should announce a deadline by which all perpetrators from the militia terrorists to the police responsible for persecuting and killing these young people are indicted; and

3- The Government of Iraq must publicly acknowledge that universal human rights apply to Iraqi people, including the right to listen to whatever music they want, wear whatever color they want, and have consensual adult sexual relations with whomever they choose.

I urge your immediate response to these crimes against the Iraqi youth.

تنتهج العصابات الاجرامية المنتشرة في العراق اساليب جديدة بقتل الشباب المتحرر , الشباب الذين يلبسون المودرن فيتم قتلهم من قبل تلك المليشيات والعصابات الاجرامية والوحشية بدما بارد وبطرق جديدة تبعث الاستياء لقد انتشرت هذه الايام في بغداد ظاهرة قتل الشباب من قبل تلك العصابات وبطرق اكثر اجراما ووحشية وهي قتلهم بواسطة حجر ( البلوك ) بحجة ان هؤلاء الشباب يطيلون شعر الرأس و يرتدون ملابس الايمو ان العصابات الاجرامية ليس لديها حلول غير القتل والبطش والاعتداء على حرية وكرامة الانسان , ان الجرائم التي ترتكب بحق الشباب هي جرائم بشعة وتتستر بغطاء الدين وتعتدي على حرية البشر في العراق وبمباركة بعض الاجندات التي تشجع تلك العصابات والمليشيات وتمولها لتحول حياة ومعيشة ملايين المواطنيين في العراق الى جحيم وبؤسا يضاف الى بؤسها المتمثل بالجوع والفقر والاستبداد التي تعاني منه ملايين الجماهير في العراق , ان ظاهرة قتل ( الايمو ) بتلك الوحشية انما يدل على هشاشة الوضع الامني وعدم تمكن الحكومة من حماية المواطنيين من قبضة المليشيات والعصابات الاجرامية المنتشرة في الشوارع و التي لايوجد يوما يمر دون ان يمر بسلام على امن وسلامة المواطنيين , ليس في جعية هذه المليشيات غير القتل والدمار والتجاوز على الحريات الشخصية والفردية للبشر ولغتها هي الدم والقتل والتصفيات , لقد باتت حرية الانسان في العراق في خطرا تام وان على المنظمات التحررية ومنظمات حقوق الانسان ان يقفوا وبكل قوة بوجه تلك العصابات وفضحها على كل الاصعدة بعد عجز الحكومة من حماية ارواح وسلامة المواطنيين , ان الجهة التي تقف وراء تلك العصابات وتمولها والتي لم تعلن عن نفسها ولم تتجرأ وتعلن عن نفسها حتى الان هي لاتقل اجراما ووحشية عن باقي الجهات والتنظيمات الارهابية و التي تقتل يوميا العمال والنساء والاطفال وتفجر المدارس والجامعات ومساطر العمال والاسواق , لقد بات واضحا وجليا ان مستقبل الشباب والشابات في العراق في خطر كبير , لقد قتلت تلك العصابات حتى الان العشرات من اولئك الشباب المتحرر وان بعض الاسماء المعلقة على جدران وازقة المدن تنتظر الموت ولااحد يحرك ساكنا من الجهات الامنية في الحكومة او تتحرى عن تلك العصابات ومن يقف ورائها ويمولها ويتستر عليها الا اذا كانت متواطئة معهم بتلك الجرائم البشعة والتشجيع عليها والا كيف تتجرأ تلك الحثالات وتقتل الشباب بتلك الطرق الوحشية دون ان تستند على جهة واجندة تدفعها على ممارسة تلك الممارسات اللاانسانية والوحشية , ان حرية المواطن في العراق قد انتهكت , واليوم فأن على الجميع ان يقفوا وقفة واحدة والتصدي لهذه الاعتداءات والوقوف بوجه تلك العصابات والحثالات ممن نصبو انفسهم حكاما يحكمون بطريقتهم طريقة السيف والرصاص وتصفية الاخرين وقتلهم وترويع الشباب والشابات وان لامكان لهم بين قوس الحرية وان الحرية ستنتصر عليهم لامحالة ولترجع تلك الزمر المجرمة الى مخابئها كالجرذان مذعورة من قبضة وشعار الحرية التي يجب ان تتربع دائما على رقاب كل الحثالات وكارهي حرية البشر

ان منظمة الحرية لطلبة وشباب العراق تستنكر وتدين تلك الممارسات الوحشية للزمر والعصابات الاجرامية بحق الشباب المتحرر وتقف الى جانب كل الشباب المتعطش للحرية وهي ماضية معهم نحو طريق الحرية من اجل مجتمع مزدهر وحر يرفل بالحرية والاخاء وان طريق العصابات الماجورة ومن يقف ورائهم سيقطع لامحالة امام مد جسور الحرية والمساواة وستنتصر الحرية , ستنتصر الحرية
