Letter-Writing Campaign: We Condemn the Greek Government’s Savage Attack on Refugees.

Target: Greek Embassies worldwide, with copies to UNHCR and EU Parliament.

The Greek government has once again displayed its brutal nature by savagely attacking a group of Iranian and Afghani asylum-seekers. We strongly condemn this despicable violence and call on the Greek government to uphold and protect the rights of asylum-seekers.

We encourage people to write to the Greek Embassy in their country, with copies to the EU Parliament and UNHCR; a sample letter is provided below, and beneath the letter is the list of recommended email addresses.

SAMPLE LETTER TO GREEK EMBASSIES:

To whom it may concern:

I am writing to express my strongest condemnation of only the most recent brutal violations of the human rights of Iranian and Afghani asylum-seekers by the barbaric security apparatus of the Greek government.

On Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at 4:00am local time, Greek police assaulted Iranian and Afghani protesters who were demanding recognition of their fundamental human rights as asylum-seekers in front of the Greek Interior Ministry. During the attack, the protesters, including women and children, were savagely beaten by the Greek police, sustaining documented injuries. A group of people was arrested, and several were subjected to hours of interrogation under pressure. It has been reported that a number of protesters received emergency care in front of the Greek Ministry of Interior.

I refuse to tolerate the Greek government’s thuggish brutality against these or any other asylum-seekers. These people, who have fled persecution and violence of the worst kinds in their home countries, have a fundamental right to asylum, protection, and no forced return. I demand that their rights be immediately upheld, according to the law and according to principles of simple human dignity, both by the Greek government and by the UNHCR.

Violations of the rights of asylum-seekers are in contravention of international law and should be dealt with accordingly.
