Professor Liliane Lazar Joins December 11 Protest at UN, Brings Message of Support from Bernhard-Henri Levy

Washington D.C. December 7, 2010 — Dr. Liliane Lazar, a feminist writer and professor of French at Hofstra University, will speak at the December 11 protest at the UN, which demands that the act of stoning be criminalized worldwide, and that gender-apartheidist and other regimes dependent on violence against women be expelled from the UN’s women’s organizations. “I am joining this protest at the United Nations Headquarters to condemn the UN silence on the stoning of Sakineh Ashtiani and many others. Sakineh Ashtiani has become the symbol of a movement fighting against the barbaric treatment of women who are condemned to death by stoning,” stated Dr. Lazar.

She recognizes her colleague, Mr. Bernard-Henri Levy, as one of the first persons to make us aware of the monstrous crime of stoning, and ask us to protest, to shout our indignation, to write to authorities of our own countries or to the Iranian authorities not to permit this horrendous injustice. Bernard-Henri Levy and Sakineh Ashtiani’s son have been fighting for months, and during the struggle Sakineh’s son Sajjad has been arrested. Bernard-Henri Levy has written many articles in the media – in the weekly magazine Le Point, in the daily newspaper Liberation and his own review La Regle du Jeu – asking to spare Sakineh Ashtiani from death and to recognize her innocence.

Dr. Lazar writes, “Bernard-Henri Lévy is not able to join us on December 11, Human Rights Day, but he supports our protest for equality and justice for all human beings, and in demanding that the United Nations end their inaction on crimes and violence committed against women.”

Liliane Lazar was raised in Paris and did all her schooling there before pursuing her studies at Columbia University, where she completed her doctoral studies and wrote her thesis on Simone de Beauvoir. She is the Secretary-Treasurer of the International Simone de Beauvoir Society, participates in all the Society’s conferences and has written numerous articles for The Simone de Beauvoir Studies. She is the co-author, with Nadine Dormoy, of A chacun sa France (To Each One His Own France), published in 1990. L’Empreinte Beauvoir (Beauvoir’s Mark) was published in 2009.

In 1980, when she was a student, she met Bernard-Henri Levy who was giving a seminar at New York University on the subject that would give birth to his book L’Idéologie Française.
