Not One More Execution, Protest Announcements, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani

Cities Participating in 100 Cities of the World Against Stoning on AUGUST 28

The following towns and cities have joined the August 28th global protest of 100 Cities of the World against Stoning. To participate, please contact us (maria.rohaly@gmail.com) and let us know what you want to do in your town or city (hand out flyers/leaflets, hold a demonstration, collect signatures on a petition, stage street theatre – however you want to condemn the stonings, torture, and executions of the Islamic Republic), what time you plan to do it, and where people who want to participate with you can find you.

  6. Can someone organise one in melboure Australia?

    Posted by Sagi | August 14, 2010, 9:43 pm
    • Dear Sagi,
I’m going to drop you an email – there is an Iran Solidarity organization that sometimes holds actions in Melbourne, but they have not been participating in the most recent rounds of global demonstrations. It may be better to just call your own demonstration. We can put you in touch with some savvy new activists in Sydney, Springwood, and Hobart who have been organizing actions there – they only started doing protests/demonstrations when they learned about Sakineh, so they remember very clearly what it is like to do something like this for the first time, and they can help you – as can we – in whatever capacity you need!
      Thanks for asking! :)
      All the best,
      Maria

      • i’m the sydney activist maria speaks of, sagi. it’s not too hard at all. i did the first one by myself and was terrified.. but it was all good :) it doesn’t need to be big, just visible. you could maybe do it at southern cross station, or parliament house… somewhere there are a lot of pedestrians walking past. make a few posters, print up a few flyers and that’s all u need for a basic protest. feel free to contact me if you need some help :)

  7. Hi,

I don’t think I could organise a demo in Bristol (UK) where I live, as people seem to be too selfish, and cowardly. I can’t even get my colleagues to sign a petition for Ms Ashtiani, let alone get them to ring or email the Iranian embassy, and the various ‘Human Rights’ and ‘Justice’ offices in Iran.

However, I’m looking into travelling to London on the 28th.

I’m surprised that there aren’t any plans for a demo in Paris yet?

Well done to the Scandinavian people for being so mobilised!

Demonstrating may seem useless to some people, but it does work sometimes.
In France, in 2005, we got the CPE (2-year contract with no redundancy payments for under 28-year-olds) scrapped.
In the building where I rent in Bristol, we had no letter boxes, no door code, squatters living in the building, and the landlords never answered the phone or returned our calls or replied to our letters. One weekend, one tenant was so fed up that he left a letter pinned in the entrance hall explaining all his unsucessful attempts to get something done. Other tenants pinned letters explaining they had had the same problems, and although we did not have a proper general meeting, we met in little groups of 2s, 3s and 4s, and discussed the situation at length. We agreed to all call the landlords’ answerphone on Monday morning, and demand letter boxes, a door code, and having the squatters kicked out. The landlords must have received a dozen phone calls, and it (partially) worked: on Monday afternoon, they installed letter boxes! One month later, we learnt that the building had been repossessed because they were not paying the mortgage…

    Regards.

  8. Anyone interested in joining me for a demo in Liverpool UK? Please email ASAP

Posted by BRIAN JONES | August 18, 2010, 3:02 pm
    • Brian – if you decide to go ahead and hold a demo, let me know and I will post it on the list of 100 Cities. That can help attract people. But you can do a very effective demo with just 1-2 people if you have to. Good on you for your activism!!!

If there is anyone out there who would like to meet up in Auckland City, if only to show our solidarity to this cause, then PLEASE contact me.

  12. Nothing in the San Francisco Bay Area? I saw Berkeley before, but that seems to have been dropped. :-(

Posted by John Burke | August 25, 2010, 3:55 am
    • Hi John,

Yes sorry about Berkeley – we had thought we had an organizer there, but then we were unable to further confirm the demonstration details with them, so unfortunately we had to drop.

But we strongly encourage individuals to go out with a sign and some flyers to represent their city and raise awareness in the community. This is about taking a stand with people in Iran, raising awareness about the situation there, and making it vey clear that we do not consent to live in a world where such barbarity is practiced against our sisters and brothers. Whether you are 1, 5, or 15 people, you can still communicate that message effectively. :) So let us know if you want to organize something, even if it’s just yourself! We have several examples of people doing just that very effectively. I’ll drop you a mail too. :)

      Best,
      Maria

    Mord,Terror, Hinrichtung, Islamische Regierung
