He is sentenced to death on charge of “Agitation against the regime”.

Zaniar Moradi & Loghman Moradi, political activists; they were arrested in August 2009; both of them are sentenced to death on charges of moharebeh (being enemy of God) and “corruption on earth”.

Sherko Moarefi, a political activist, was detained in October 2008; he was sentenced to death for “acting against national security” and “being enemy of God”.

Yusuf Naderkhani, an Iranian pastor sentenced to death for converting from Islam to Christianity.

These political prisoners are in grave danger of being executed any time now. We call on all of you who care for human rights and freedom of expression to act now and save their lives.

Time is running out. This is an urgent appeal. We need to act now. Their only “crime” is the exercise of their freedom of expression.

The Islamic regime of Iran is sentencing Saeed, Zaniar, Loghman, Sherko, Yusuf, and hundreds of others to death in order to terrorize all of those who demand change and freedom.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE ACT NOW!

Their lives depend on your support. The international support has been successful in forcing the Islamic regime in Iran to retreat from executing prisoners;

We can do it again this time too, BUT WE NEED TO ACT QUICKLY!

All you have to do is to copy and paste the below message and send it to the human right organisations and recipients below. This would only take you one minute, but that one minute of yours can save four lives.

Sample protest letter:

I express my strongest protest against the imprisonment and the death sentence of Saeed Malekpour, Zaniar Moradi, Loghman Moradi, Sherko Moarefi, Yusuf Naderkhani. I urge you to pressure the Islamic regime of Iran to overturn the execution sentences of these four political prisoners and to free them immediately.

Stop Deporting Marxists, Christians, Women’s Rights Activists, Journalists and Bloggers to the Prisons and Gallows of the Islamic Terrorists in Iran!

Mr. Billström! If anyone has forgotten, you should certainly remember that last year we, the international human rights activists, stopped the Swedish Migration Office from committing a number of “mistakes” which could lead to personal or even social tragedies for us Iranians, and of course a political scandal for your government.*

We stopped the Swedish government from deporting a number of Iranian political activists, among them a number of very well known personalities such as Marzieh Kamangar. Your migration office only realized that they were about to break international laws and conventions when international human right activists went so far as to organize international campaigns and demonstrations. In some cases, we even brought in European trade unions such as CGT in support of demands to stop those strange and very irrational decisions.

We are indebted to all those who helped us to stop those illegal deportations, and we are thankful for living in an era in which activists from all over the world — Swedes, Norwegians, Americans, Dutch, Iranians, Australians, French — can align in defense of humanity and support those Iranian activists that the Migration Office, on your watch, was about to deliver to the regime of Islamic murdering thugs. You should be thankful too!

Mr. Billström! It is possible that many Swedes do not know yet, but you are well aware of the fact that your government and its predecessor have committed despicable crimes by delivering those who sought refuge at your door to barbarian dictators and butchers like Bashar el-Assad and Hosni Mubarak. It is regrettable, and we are saddened that we, the humane Sweden and the international front of humanity, were not able to stop those recent deportations of Syrian activists to the hands of the Assad’s regime, or Iraqi gays to Iraq, where homosexuals are being beaten, arrested, tortured and even killed with the blessing of a reactionary political entity. We are determined to do our utmost to support the rights of all who are under threat of persecution, Iranians as well as non-Iranians.

Evidently, Mr. Billström, the Migration Office, after a short pause, has resumed its haunting of Iranian activists and dissidents who seek asylum in Sweden. There are a number of Iranians who were recently detained and are under imminent danger of forced deportations. And there is an even larger number of fearful Iranians who were denied their right to refugee status by your Migration Office only because we, the Iranian millions have failed to convince your government that the Islamic regime is nothing more than a criminal gang of terrorists, murderers and rapists, and not only they do not and have never in the past 33 years represented Iranian people but with the deplorable blessing of the international community have maintained power by genocide and mass executions. Yet you do not seem to be convinced!

You seem not to be convinced that the Islamic regime is not an entity to which you can send back political dissidents and religious converts, despite the sacrifices our people have made;

despite over 100,000 executions;

despite well-known unmarked mass graves like Khavaran;

despite Kahrizak and Evin and Gohardasht and hundreds like them;

despite tens of thousands imprisoned;

despite years of peoples’ armed resistance in Iranian Kurdistan;

despite atrocities committed and being committed infront of your own eyes, against the Iranian Arabs, Baluchis and Turkmens;

despite the bloody crackdowns on students, workers, teachers, journalists and bloggers;

despite genocide committed by this regime and a deliberate, criminal cover-up by the international community and its security council;

despite the manifestation in 2009 by millions of Iranians of their disgust with barbarity of shari’a law, gender apartheid and this savage dictatorship!

Mr. Billström! You don’t seem to be convinced, and this puzzles us. Is it even possible that your office and your government has deliberately chosen to ignore its legal let alone moral responsibilities?

Mr. Billström! You certainly are aware of the political situation these barbarians have deliberately brought on our people and others in the region.

While the regime of the Islamic terrorists is openly targeting innocent civilians in other countries like Georgia, India, Thailand;

…while every one, including your own office, is well aware of the Islamic regime’s intentions and capabilities to monitor movements of the opposition outside Iran and especially in Europe to eliminate the opposition through terror, assassination and intimidation;

and while the warmongers of the world have created a situation in which the Islamic regime has had unprecedented freedom to persecute the opposition inside its borders…

While these murderers have no other means of maintaining their reign but jail, torture, execution;

and while there have been more than 60 executions in just the past 2 months,

…you have intensified hunting and arresting and threatening deportation of Iranian asylum seekers.

Haven’t you heard that the hellish prisons of the Islamic regime are overflowing with journalists, bloggers, union activists, women rights activists and people who were just caught with Facebook accounts?

Mr. Billström!

While you should be aware all the above, it bothers us to see that despite undeniable evidence and the background of atrocities committed against people like the Iranian convert Mohammadreza (Maxim) Hamedian Esfahani (#11-084450/11), you nevertheless make every effort to evade international law and return him to serve out the next 10 or more years as a political prisoner under torture in Iran!

We along with many other human rights activists have been wondering what exactly your officials are trying to accomplish when they not only deny Hosein Jaafar Ali Jasbi (#11421539) his right to asylum, but arrest and prepare to deport him despite undeniable evidence of his activities against the Islamic regime as a Marxist and active member of an organization that has fought against the Islamic regime since its first day!

Wouldn’t a sane person question your migration office’s competence and judgment, knowing that Hosein’s brother and sister have already been executed by the regime of executions, and his father has spent years in jail for political dissent?

It bothers us as Iranian dissidents that your government at this time, while knowing that a popular revolution against the regime of Islamic butchers is imminent, chooses to intensify hunting, arresting, and deporting Iranian dissidents.

Mr. Billström! In the light of the above, we hope that you choose to take position in favour of Iranian people in their quest for freedom and a humane society, and instead of sending Mohammadreza Hamedian Esfahani, Hosein Jaafar Ali Jasbi, Yasin Elyasi, and other Iranian asylum seekers who have turned to the Swedish people for refuge, to the jails and the gallows of the Islamic regime.

Instead, you should support us to free the priest Youcef Nadarkhani, and to stop executions of Zanyar and Loghman Moradi, Saeed Malekpoor, Shirko Moarefi, and hundreds of other political prisoners, and prisoners of conscience in Iran.

Iranian people are already indebted to the humanity of the Swedish people. We will not forget the generosity and solidarity of our friends in times of hardships.

Best regards,
Ahmad Fatemi

* There are a number of political prisoners under imminent danger of execution like Loghman and Zanyar Moradi (accused of being Marxists and confessed under threat of rape to an act they never committed); and Saeed Malekpoor, a Canadian-Iranian computer programmer who is to be executed imminently because the ignorant of the “judiciary” do not approve of how his computer programs have been used by third parties; or Shirko Moarefi, a former leftist activist, accused of “Moharebeh.” These are only a fraction of those under threat of execution.

Political background to these demands:

As the international community of inhumane diplomacy has been silent against years of atrocities committed by the closest allies of the west, backward barbaric regimes like the Saudi regime of savagery…

…while Western governments condemn the bloodbath in Assad’s bloody Syria yet cover up for the butcher of Bahrain, and at the same time provide the Egyptian junta with everything those murderers need to crack down on the Revolution of Bread and Freedom…

…while they threaten millions of Iranians with war and bombs and hunger, only to bring these Islamic thugs to the negotiating table to discuss terms and rules…

…while the other pole of inhumanity, the Russian and Chinese governments, has found yet another opportunity to alter their positions in the balance of the reactionary rulers of our world by their unconditional support of mass murderers and genocidaires…

We call you, the humane front. We call you out to join hands in our own international front of humanity, in international solidarity of the 99% against the dictatorships in Iran, Syria, Egypt, Bahrain.

Join us and demand a stop to all executions, to demand unconditional freedom of all political prisoners in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria, Bahrain and worldwide.

Join us and demand an end to dictatorships wherever they are, and demand a humane society.

Join us to declare once again that these murderers and hangmen do not represent our people. The Islamic regime in Iran, the savages of Jeddah and Manama, Assad’s gang of rapists and sharpshooters, the Egyptian junta – these are not legitimate in the eyes of women and men struggling for freedom and a humane society!

Direcciones:
Para: turan@unhcr.org
cc: mustesarlik@icisleri.gov.tr; gsekreter@icisleri.gov.tr; diab@icisleri.gov.tr

You can enunciate your demand clearly in English; the prison staff will understand his name and why you are calling; some do speak English.

You can also say “Stop the execution of Saeed Malekpour” in Farsi like this: “Saeed Malekpour raa edaam nakonid!”
Or you can say “Saeed Malekpour azad baayad gardad,” which means Saeed Malekpour must be freed!
Thank you to @shary20 on Twitter and dear Nick for the translations to Finglish.

The numbers that are currently staffed at Evin Prison are the following:
+982122430014
+982122430015
+982122430016

The number +982122430017 may also work, but when we tested it, no one answered. Many thanks to Nasi Payghambarian for providing these numbers.

If you call from the US or Canada, don’t forget to dial 011 first.

When people call Iran from all over the world in different languages & demand a stop to the execution of political prisoner, it makes a difference. Even if we ultimately cannot stop the execution, it lets those who are supporting these executions know, firsthand, that the world is watching and we will stand up to defend the lives of Iranian political prisoners. That too has its effects, even if only psychological. No effort is wasted.

If you can’t call long distance on your phone, you can also use Skype and do a Skype-to-phone call. You need to buy some Skype credit, but is very inexpensive to call from skype-to-phone.

The prison staff were civilized when they were called. So don’t be afraid. Call Evin Prison in Iran & tell them not to execute Saeed Malekpour!

REPORTS FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE TAKEN ACTION:

Nick:
“Just found a great tactic:
Go to Youtube and find a protest video in which people are chanting.
Call Evin and tell them that people are coming to occupy the prison.
Then you let them hear the sound of the clip.
I think the guy just **** his pants even if just for a second. If we keep telling them they will **** their pants again.
Marg bar Jomhourie Eslami”

Nick:
“Just made the call. They said that there is noone with that name there but don’t listen to they’re bullshit. A good idea is to play sounds from protests in they’re ear. He told me to stop calling even though I’ve only called once, can only mean one thing :) also there was someone on the line the first time I tried.
Marg bar Jomhourie Eslami”

Maria:
“I said it in English first, then Farsi! I only called the first number – will call the rest as soon as I get home! The guy sounded confused at first – he was just really quiet after I said, “I’m calling to tell you to stop the execution of Saeed Malekpour.” So then I said it in Farsi. And he said… I don’t know – something short, like OK. And he was civil, just sounded a little surprised lol.”

To the UNHCR office in Turkey:

I am writing with regard to the urgent cases of Iranian asylum-seekers Bina Darabzand (UNHCR case #385-11C08824 ) and his son Okatai Darabzand (UNHCR case #385-11C08827).

Bina Darabzand is a well-known life-long anti-regime political activist and leading member of the Consistency Committee to Establish Workers’ Organizations in Iran – an organization whose members have all been subjected to beatings, persecution, and lengthy jail sentences. Members who are not currently political prisoners have been forced to flee Iran to save their own lives. Yet leading activists like Bina remain at risk even in Turkey.

Oktai Darabzand is a journalist covering human rights and other news in Iran. He is without political affiliation, yet his website has been designated by the Islamic Republic authorities as belonging to anti-regime organization PMOI. The Islamic Republic regime’s notorious brutal repression of journalists and its ongoing persecution of members of PMOI underscore the need for Oktai Darabzand to be granted to asylum and protection.

Both Bina and Oktai Darabzand have legitimate claims of asylum, and both remain in danger as long as they remain under their current insecure situation in Turkey.

I urge UNHCR to expedite the processing of the Darabzands’ cases, grant them refugee status as a matter of urgency, and quickly facilitate their resettlement to a safe third country.

Sincerely,
They have sought refugee status in Turkey; however, they remain under pressure from the Turkish authorities to return to Iran. Given the serious and continuing risk to their lives, we urge UNHCR to expedite the processing of their cases, grant them refugee status as a matter of urgency, and quickly facilitate their resettlement to a safe third country.

Bina Darabzand
Bina Darabzand is a prominent activist who has been politically active from the age of 15, first against the Shah’s dictatorship, and then against the Islamic Republic regime. In addition to being a leading member of the Consistency Committee to Establish Workers’ Organizations in Iran, he has also re-started his political blog, http://salam-democrat.com.

Numerous labor activists with the Consistency Committee to Establish Workers’ Organizations in Iran have faced persecution and imprisonment for exercising their fundamental rights to organize, and for demanding workers’ rights, including unpaid back wages, fair pay, and benefits. Behnam Ebrahimzadeh, a member of the same Committee, is a political prisoner serving a 20-year sentence for his membership in this organization. Nearly all members of the Committee to Establish Workers’ Organizations have been arrested, beaten, or persecuted by regime authorities in Iran including Shahrokh Zamani and Muhammad Jarahi, who are now serving 11- and 10-year prison sentences, respectively, in Tabriz Prison. Others have been released temporarily and only on the basis of having paid multiple hundreds of millions Tomans in bail.

Oktai Darabzand
Bina’s son, Oktai Darabzand, is a journalist with a focus on political and human rights issues. Six years ago, Oktai established a weblog called “Aseman Daily News,” which published the news of political prisoners from jail as well as other human rights violations by the Islamic Republic regime. The blog also included social, economic, and foreign news sections. Journalists and bloggers covering human rights news in Iran are routinely persecuted, tortured, sentenced to lengthy prison terms, and even sentenced to execution in Iran; Reporters Without Borders provides an overview of the risk faced by such journalists and bloggers in Iran (link).

During the 2009 uprising, Oktai’s weblog was blocked on the orders of the Judicial Power. Immediately, with funding from his father, Oktai opened a website with the same name (http://asemandailynews.com), continuing with his activities.

However, in April of 2011, Oktai’s website was designated by the regime as “a PMOI site.” Many members of PMOI (Peoples’ Mojahedin of Irani, or Mojahedin-e Khalgh) – and those accused of affiliation – are condemned to brutally harsh prison sentences and execution. Jafar Kazemi, Ali Saremi, and Mohammad Ali Haj Aghaei are only 3 recent and well-known examples of those accused of PMOI membership who have been executed on that basis.

Although Oktai has no political affiliation or contact with any organized group; however, because of his journalistic activities, and because the Islamic Republic has designated his site as being affiliated with PMOI, his life is at clear and unquestionable risk in Iran.

Situation in Turkey
Bina and Oktai entered Turkey and registered with the UNHCR. However, they were soon informed by the Ankara Police (Foreign Citizens Bureau) that the Turkish Ministry refused to recognize their status as asylum-seekers; they were given until 8 February 2012 to leave Turkey and return to Iran. Thanks to pressure from Iranian and European supporters, UNHCR accelerated the interview process and contacted the Turkish Interior Ministry and Police, requesting that they respect Bina and Oktai’s status as asylum-seekers whose case is pending review.

The Turkish police demonstrated their anger at the pressure that had been exerted on them to accept the Darabzand’s appeal. Ultimately, Bina and Oktai were required to leave Ankara and go to a small town that has no facilities, not even a bus terminal, 3 hours from any city. They are to wait for a response from UNHCR there, but they remain at elevated risk of deportation at any moment. Should they be illegally deported to Iran by the Turkish authorities, not only would they face certain imprisonment and torture, but both of their lives would be at risk.

TAKE ACTION NOW:
There is an urgent need for people to write to UNHCR in Turkey and request that UNHCR expedite the processing of the Darabzand’s cases, grant them refugee status as a matter of urgency, and quickly facilitate their resettlement to a safe third country. A sample letter follows; we ask everyone to use the sample letter, or write a letter of your own, and send it to UNHCR in Turkey, with copies to the Turkish Interior Ministry, asking UNHCR to take urgent action, given the threat to the Darabzands’ lives, and their current insecure situation in Turkey.

Sample Letter and Addresses:

Addresses:
To: turan@unhcr.org
cc: mustesarlik@icisleri.gov.tr; gsekreter@icisleri.gov.tr; diab@icisleri.gov.tr
